About
Mary Kate is a student of engineering and multimedia artist. She is currently pursuing a BS in Materials Science and Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and she holds a BFA in Animation and Digital Arts from Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture Arts (2017).
Mary Kate has five years of professional experience working as an animator and fabricator within the film and entertainment industry. During this time she built upon her foundations in 2D / 3D animation, CAD / 3D modeling, and VFX / SFX compositing, and gained additional skills in mechanical design and R&D when she began working as a fabricator within the stop-motion animation industry. Her practical competencies include manual machining, mold making and casting, sculpting, electronics hardware assembly, soft goods fabrication, and 3D printing. Her credits include BBC’s Moon and Me (fabricator), Adult Swim’s The Shivering Truth (fabricator), Netflix’s Wendell and Wild (fabricator), and NASA’s documentary film First Light (VFX animator).
Mary Kate made the switch over to the sciences when she began working as an opto-mechanical research assistant within Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Electro-Optical Systems Lab. Currently, she is a member of the Losego research group within the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tech, where she conducts research on hybrid polymeric materials modified via gas phase deposition methods. Additionally, she enjoys taking part in the development of projects used in undergraduate materials science coursework.
In her spare time, Mary Kate enjoys photography and illustration, writing, hanging out with her pet duck, and following her curiosities wherever they may lead (most definitely to her doom).
